Abstract:
Traditional lever-based biomechanics explains torque and joint rotation but does not fully account for how the body absorbs impact, recycles energy, maintains joint play, and protects neurovascular structures. The Integrated Spring–Mass Model reframes the musculoskeletal system as a dynamic network of biological springs interacting with body mass to provide four essential functions.

In this model, tendons, ligaments, fascia, cartilage, and muscles act as compression, torsional, and extension springs that deform and recoil in response to load. Clinical and biomechanical analyses of gait, impact forces, and joint compliance demonstrate four primary functions: (1) Impact absorption—springs buffer ground reaction forces and protect connective tissues; (2) Energy recycling—elastic recoil reduces metabolic cost and improves endurance; (3) Space for joints—restored joint play preserves mobility, distributes force safely, and prevents degeneration; and (4) Neurovascular tunnel integrity—spring compliance maintains cross-sectional tunnel space, enabling the safe passage of blood vessels and nerves under variable loading.

A unique feature of this model is that it introduces a mirrored clinical framework, the Human Spring Approach, which applies the integrated spring–mass principles to the examination, treatment, and maintenance of the human body.

Abstract:
Conventional models of spinal biomechanics often rely on lever-based explanations of torque and load, which underestimate the body’s ability to absorb forces, recycle energy, and adapt under stress. The Human Spring Approach applies the principles of the Integrated Spring–Mass Model to the spine as part of an integrated full-body torsion and compression spring, reframing the body as a living spring system rather than a rigid lever system. This perspective provides new insights into the progression of back pain and disc herniation.

The model highlights four critical functions of the spring system: (1) Impact absorption—elastic deformation of discs, ligaments, and paraspinal tissues buffers compressive loading; (2) Energy recycling—spring recoil assists motion and reduces fatigue; (3) Space for joints—restored spring compliance maintains intervertebral joint play, reducing uneven loading and degeneration; and (4) Neurovascular safety—elastic spacing protects spinal nerve roots and vascular supply as forces are distributed.

Chronic back pain and herniated discs are conceptualized as a progressive breakdown of this spring system: restricted joint play, the triggering of spinal cord and brain modulated, guarding, and splinting protective reflexes, and loss of compliance elevate loading on discs and narrow neuroforaminal tunnels.
